I begin with the outcome you are trying to achieve and work backward.
What must be true for this to happen? What is true today? What is missing between the two?
Sometimes the answer is a decision that has not been made. Sometimes it is information we do not yet have, a capability that needs to be developed, an assumption that needs to be questioned, or something in the way the work is currently being done.
The purpose is not to produce more possibilities. It is to understand what is actually preventing progress clearly enough to do something about it.
The Work
The answer is not assumed in advance.
I don't begin with a framework and fit your situation into it. I don't add a solution simply because one is available.
We ask questions. We examine what we know and what we are assuming. When information is missing, we research. When there are several possible paths, we evaluate and test them.
Then we pay attention to what actually happens.
If something doesn't produce the result we expected, that is information. We look at the difference between what we expected and what occurred, understand what it tells us, and use that to determine the next move.
The work continues to become more precise as reality gives us more information.
